Summer Sun and Shingle Aging: How UV and Heat Wear Out a Midwest Roof

Winter gets blamed for most roof damage, but the long, hot Midwest summer quietly ages shingles faster than any snowstorm. Here is what UV and heat actually do up there.

Ask most homeowners in Illinois what wears out a roof and they will point to winter — the ice, the snow load, the freeze-thaw. Those are real, but they are not the whole story, and they are not even the biggest part of it. The slow, relentless aging that actually determines how long a roof lasts happens during the long, hot Midwest summer, when the sun beats down on the shingles for fourteen hours a day and the roof surface climbs far hotter than the air around it. That summer punishment does not announce itself the way a storm does, which is exactly why it is so easy to overlook until the roof is years older than its calendar age.

The first force at work is ultraviolet radiation. Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of mineral granules embedded in their top surface, and those granules exist primarily to shield the asphalt underneath from UV. Asphalt is a petroleum product, and like any petroleum product left in the sun, it dries out and breaks down when UV reaches it. The granules take the hit instead — but over years of summer exposure they slowly loosen and wash off, a few at a time, into the gutters. Once enough granules are gone from an area, the asphalt below is exposed directly to the sun and begins to degrade much faster, which is why granule loss tends to accelerate once it starts.

The second force is heat itself, and the Midwest summer delivers plenty of it. A dark shingle in direct sun can reach 150 degrees or more on a hot afternoon, and that heat does two things. It drives the volatile oils out of the asphalt, leaving the shingle drier, stiffer, and more brittle over time. And it makes the shingle expand. As the roof heats up through the day and cools through the night, every shingle expands and contracts, day after day, all summer long. That constant thermal cycling works at the shingles and at the fasteners holding them, gradually loosening the bond and curling the edges of shingles that have lost their flexibility.

Curling and clawing are the visible results of that process, and they are worth recognizing. As a shingle ages and dries out, it loses the flat, pliable quality it had when new. The edges may begin to turn upward, or the center may rise while the edges stay down. Either way, a shingle that no longer lies flat is a shingle that wind can get under and rain can slip beneath. Once curling is widespread across a roof, the surface has crossed from aging into actual vulnerability, and it tends to progress quickly from there because the same heat that caused it keeps working.

Ventilation plays a larger role in summer aging than most homeowners realize. A roof over a poorly ventilated attic runs hotter, because the heat that builds in the attic has nowhere to escape and radiates back up into the underside of the decking and shingles. That extra heat accelerates every aging process described above. A roof with balanced intake and exhaust ventilation runs cooler, sheds attic heat, and ages more slowly as a result. This is one reason two identical roofs installed the same year can be in very different condition a decade later — the one breathing properly simply lived at a lower temperature through every summer.

The practical takeaway is that summer is the right time to actually look at a roof, not just the season after a storm. The signs of heat and UV aging are all visible: bald patches where granules have worn away, an accumulation of granules in the gutters and at the bottom of downspouts, shingles that have begun to curl or claw at the edges, and a generally faded, dried-out look compared to how the roof appeared when it was newer. A roof showing several of these signs is telling you it is in the back half of its life, regardless of how many winters it has technically survived.

Catching that aging early changes the options available. A roof that is aging but still sound can often be helped — improving attic ventilation to bring its operating temperature down, addressing a few curling or damaged areas before they let water in, and keeping the gutters clear so granule buildup does not back water up under the eaves. None of that reverses aging, but it slows the decline and buys time to plan a replacement on the homeowner's schedule rather than in the middle of a leak. A roof that is left until the summer damage compounds into active leaks rarely offers that luxury.

For Midwest homeowners, the useful habit is to think of summer as the season that ages the roof and therefore the season to inspect it. A look from the ground with binoculars, a check of what is collecting in the gutters, and a professional eye on anything that looks worn will catch heat and UV damage while there are still good choices to make. The roof that lasts its full rated life is almost always the one whose owner paid attention during the long hot months, not just after the first snow.
