For most of the last century, that layer was asphalt-saturated felt — the black tar paper most people picture when they think of what goes under shingles. Felt is a paper or fiberglass mat saturated with asphalt to make it water-resistant, and it comes in two weights, 15-pound and the heavier 30-pound. It has kept roofs dry for generations and remains a perfectly serviceable, budget-friendly option. But felt has real limitations that show up most under exactly the conditions a Midwest roof faces: it absorbs water and can wrinkle, it grows brittle and cracks over time and in cold, and it tears fairly easily, which is a genuine hazard on a roof during a windy installation.

Synthetic underlayment is the modern alternative, made from woven polymer materials rather than asphalt-saturated paper. It was developed specifically to address the weaknesses of felt, and on most of the measures that matter it outperforms. It is far lighter, so a roll covers much more area and is easier and safer to install. It is dramatically stronger and more tear-resistant, which matters when a crew is walking it and when wind is trying to get under it. And critically, it does not absorb water and will not wrinkle or rot the way felt can when it gets wet before the shingles are on.

That water behavior is where the Midwest climate makes the difference concrete. Roofing projects here routinely get interrupted by weather, and it is common for underlayment to be exposed to rain for a stretch before the shingles are finished. Felt that gets rained on absorbs the water, wrinkles, and can telegraph those wrinkles up through the shingles or lose its integrity entirely, sometimes forcing a redo. Synthetic sheds that water and stays flat and sound, so a storm mid-installation is far less likely to compromise the job. In a region where you cannot count on a dry week, that resilience has real value.

The strength and safety advantages compound on the Midwest steep-slope roofs that dominate residential neighborhoods. Synthetic underlayment typically has a textured, walkable surface that gives crews better footing than the slick, tear-prone felt, which is a safety matter as much as a quality one. Its tear resistance also means it holds up under the cap nails and staples that fasten it, resisting the wind that would peel or shred felt during the days it is exposed. On a roof that has to endure Midwest wind even during its own installation, the tougher material simply behaves better.

Cost is the honest counterpoint. Synthetic underlayment costs more per roll than felt, and for a homeowner on a tight budget, quality 30-pound felt on a straightforward roof remains a legitimate choice that has protected homes for decades. The question is where the money is best spent. Underlayment is a layer you do not see and cannot easily upgrade later without tearing off the shingles, so it is one of the places where paying somewhat more up front buys durability that lasts the full life of the roof. For most Midwest homeowners doing a full replacement, the modest upcharge for synthetic is money well spent.

It is also worth distinguishing underlayment in the field of the roof from the specialized ice-and-water membrane used at the vulnerable edges and valleys. Those are different products serving different purposes, and a good Midwest roof uses both — a peel-and-stick waterproof membrane at the eaves and valleys where ice dams and heavy water flow concentrate, and a field underlayment, felt or synthetic, across the rest. Understanding that the underlayment discussion is about the broad field of the roof helps a homeowner ask the right question: what is going down under my shingles, everywhere, and will it hold up when water gets past them.

For a Midwest homeowner, the takeaway is that the layer under the shingles deserves a moment of attention when a roof is being replaced. Felt still works and still has a place, especially on a budget. But synthetic underlayment is lighter, tougher, safer to install, and far better at surviving the wet, windy, temperature-swinging conditions a roof here has to endure — including during its own construction. Since it is a layer that will be sealed under the shingles for the next twenty or thirty years, it is worth asking the contractor what they plan to use and why, and treating that answer as part of the quality of the roof, not an afterthought.
